Becoming a Scholar
menubar Complete List of Grantees Our program helps outstanding junior faculty launch successful research careers.
From 1993 to 2004,The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation awarded 175 career development grants to junior faculty in the following generalist disciplines through the Generalist Physician Faculty Scholars Program:
  • family practice
  • general internal medicine
  • general pediatrics
Scholars report the following benefits from their four years in the program:
  • protected time/funding security to continue and expand research (The sponsoring institution agrees to protect 40% of the scholar's time from clinical and teaching responsibilities in order to conduct research);
  • networking opportunities with peers and mentors; and
  • prestige and recognition.
Though the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has decided to close this program in 2008, the program will continue to operate until the scholars accepted for funding in 2004 finish their projects. We are no longer accepting applications for funding.

Mentoring
Scholars are paired with one of 15 leading academicians who serve on the National Advisory Committee (NAC). NAC mentors offer guidance on project management and career development issues.

Mission
This program is intended to strengthen generalist physician faculty in the nation's medical schools by improving their research capacity while maintaining their clinical and teaching competencies.
