Future of Generalism

Scholars and mentors from the Generalist Physician Faculty Scholars Program published a supplement, The Future of Generalism in Medicine, April 19, 2005 in the Annals of Internal Medicine. Their work culminates two years of thinking, talking and writing about the future of generalism.

The project began in late 2002, when the National Advisory Committee decided to challenge schol ars to think big and creatively about new approaches to the problems plaguing generalism. More than 50 current and past scholars and NAC members responded to the challenge and organized into 10 working groups. Each group was charged with developing short white papers related to an assigned topic. The papers' conclusions were critiqued at the December 2003 annual meeting.

Scholars surveyed in January 2004 expressed a desire to submit the white papers for publication in a special supplement for Annals of Internal Medicine, and to carry forward their ideas in other venues. During the first half of 2004, authors revised their white papers with the help of three internal reviewers: Eric B. Larson, University of Washington, Seattle; Kevin Grumbach, MD, University of California, San Francisco; and Kenneth Roberts, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, N.C. These reviewers selected four of the 10 papers for submission to Annals. Annals accepted the fo llowing four papers for publication in the supplement, with an accompanying editorial co-authored by the three internal reviewers. Of the papers not submitted to Annals, two have been submitted to other journals and also are listed below.
